Mount Athos is one of those truly unique destinations in Greece that just draws you in. Whether you’re visiting to explore the monastic community’s history and spirituality or just curious about this place, you’ll start your journey in the bustling city of Thessaloniki and end up at the ferry port in Ouranoupoli.

This is a route that’s travelled by many pilgrims and the journey itself is really quite straightforward with a bit of planning.

Working Out the Route

The thing to keep in mind with Mount Athos, is that it’s not easy to get to by car. The last point you can actually drive to is the tiny coastal town of Ouranoupoli, which is roughly 130 km (about an hour and a half) south east of Thessaloniki. From there, you hop on a ferry to reach the peninsula.

Of course, traffic is always a factor and so the drive from Thessaloniki to Ouranoupoli can take a bit longer than expected. But most ferries to Mount Athos set off in the morning and so many people choose to book an early transfer to catch the ferry.

Step 1 – Getting Hold of Your Entry Permit

What You Need To Know

Access to Mount Athos is heavily regulated. You need an official entry permit – which is called a “Diamonitirion,” a permit that has been handed out to visitors for centuries.

You get your permit from the Pilgrims’ Office either in Thessaloniki or Ouranoupoli. It’s a good idea to get it sorted out well before you travel, especially if you’re planning to go during the busy summer months.

Contacting the Pilgrims Office

  • Thessaloniki Office – you’ll find it on 109 Egnatias Street
  • Ouranoupoli Office – is just a stone’s throw from the ferry port

You just need to provide a few details like your full name, your passport number or ID, and your travel dates – and that’s it. The permit is good for four days.

Step 2 – Getting To Ouranoupoli from Thessaloniki

There are three main ways to get to the ferry port.

Catching the Bus

The public bus service (KTEL) runs between Thessaloniki and Ouranoupoli. It’s a pretty affordable option, but it can take a bit longer and the departures are a bit limited. It’s really best for solo travellers with a bit more time on their hands and no need to stick to a tight schedule.

Taking a Taxi

You can try taking a regular taxi, but it doesn’t come cheap for the distance – especially if you go during peak season. The price will depend on the time of day and the availability, and you might struggle to get a taxi at the crack of dawn.

Private Transfer

A private transfer is probably going to be the most practical and comfortable way to get to Ouranoupoli. A driver will pick you up from your hotel, or airport, and take you straight to the port – nice and easy. This is especially useful if you’re on an early ferry, or travelling with a group, or you’ve got a lot of luggage.

Step 3 – Catching The Ferry

Once you get to Ouranoupoli, you’ll need to pop into the port to get your ferry ticket and show your entry permit. Most ferries to Mount Athos set off between 8:30 and 10:30 in the morning, so aim to get there a bit before to avoid scrambling around at the last minute.

The ferry ride itself is really nice – you get to see some of the monasteries set into the hills and the sea.

Useful Travel Tips

  • Plan your transfer around your ferry time.
  • Arrange your entry permit before traveling.
  • Travel early in the day to avoid delays.
  • Keep your passport or ID with you for checks.
  • If you’re staying in Thessaloniki the night before, consider booking your transfer in advance.
